Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
