Weather Balloons Used to Contraband Tobacco Products Closed Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packages of contraband cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
